Towards a Healthy Society – Are parks playing their part?

An ever increasing body of research has confirmed the benefits of parks, nature and physical activity. The provision, proximity and accessibility of urban parks, combined with good park design, facility provision and maintenance are vitally important for a healthy society.

However, in reality, are parks playing their part in encouraging a more active and healthy population? Using 57,000 park visitation records over the past 13 years, this presentation utilises empirical evidence to provide critical answers.

Are more or less people walking to parks? Walking further? Are more people cycling to parks?

Are parks attracting more active users (walkers, cyclists, joggers)? More often? For longer?

Are parks fulfilling their role of connecting people with good health through outdoor activity?
